Although humans are prefigured in the animal world, we are first and foremost created in God’s image, and this is with regards to our suitability for Him, not our own excellence. We should not conceive of ourselves ascending through preformation in other animals (as if we were in their image by descent), but rather see their existence as echoing ours.
