Reading Common Grace 5. Humanity as Created

Humanity as created was the crowning glory of creation living in an exactly bespoke environment. We represent a duality; dependent on nature for physical sustenance and dependent on sustenance from God for our moral and rational faculties. These two needs correspond to the two trees mentioned in Genesis 2 – one which must be eaten of (the tree of life) and one which must not (the tree of conscience). In essence, we must understand ourselves to be as dependent upon God for our fundamental life as our body is upon natural food. The denial of this is the heart of humanity’s disobedience in the Fall.
